Questions About Doula Services
What is a Doula?
ĎThe word "Doula" comes from the ancient Greek meaning "a woman who serves" and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.' (DONA)
Why use a Doula?
Pregnancy is a dynamic time in a womanís life. There are complex needs during labor and Treasured Journey Doula Services can help you navigate whatever may come.
Numerous clinical studies have found that a Doula attended birth:
- tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications
- reduces negative feelings about oneís childbirth experience
- reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans
- reduces the motherís request for pain medication
Research shows parents who receive support can:
What about the fatherís role when using a Doula?
- Feel more secure and cared for
- Are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics
- Have greater success with breastfeeding
- Have greater self-confidence
- Have less postpartum depression
- Have lower incidence of abuse
A fatherís role during birth is never replaced by a Doula. Today, partners are taking an active role in labor but some may feel the huge expectation placed on them. With a Doula supporting a laboring family, not only is the mother provided with unlimited support from another caring individual, but the Father is also provided with support. Having a Doula allows the father to be able to support his partner emotionally during the labor and birth while also enjoying it himself without the pressure to remember everything he learned in childbirth class!
There is no one who knows their partner better than a father. With the unconditional support of Treasured Journey Doula Services, Dad can feel supported along with the laboring mother. Having a Doulas support creates the perfect support team for a expecting family.
